JAKARTA - Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings has formed a development team to work on chatbots similar to ChatGPT. this was conveyed by two sources familiar with the matter.

ChatGPT's ability to create sensible text instantly has sparked an insane global interest in the technology behind it called a generative AI.

Although the Microsoft-backed OpenAI doesn't allow users in China to create accounts to access chatbots, the AI model behind the program is relatively accessible and is increasingly being used in Chinese consumer technology applications.

Tencent's competitors, including Alibaba Group and Baidu Inc, have also announced that they are working on their own offerings.

Tencent products, to be called "HunyuanAide", will combine a company's AI training model called "Hunyuan", according to sources not permitted to speak to the media and refuse to be identified.

In a statement requested by Reuters, Tencent reiterated his statement on February 9 that the company was conducting research on ChatGPT technology.

The news comes after China's Ministry of Science and Technology said on Friday 24 February that it sees technological potentials like ChatGPT and will drive integration of artificial intelligence into China's society and economy.

According to the South China Morning Post, Tencent's AI Hunyuan model in November reached its highest score in the Chinese Language Understanding Evaluation Test (CLUE) - a series of tasks used to assess the computer's ability to understand and respond to Chinese text.

It is also the first time an AI model has scored higher than humans on CLUE since the test was made three years ago. Local media 36kr first reported the formation of the "HunyuanAide" team.
