JAKARTA - Apple's contract manufacturer in China, Luxshare Precision Industry Co Ltd, will help develop an augmented reality (AR) device that Apple has long been waiting for, the Nikkei Asia reported on Thursday 23 February.

Luxshare has taken over the AR development team in Shanghai previously owned by Pegatron from Taiwan which first helped Apple develop the device. Taiwanese company Foxconn is also helping the project, said Nikkei, and Apple has appointed two of its important suppliers, namely Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and Sony, to develop the OLED microscreen for the device.

Apple, Luxshare Precision, Foxconn, and Sony have not responded to Reuters' request for comment, while TSMC declined to comment.

Bloomberg previously stated that the Apple headset is expected to be launched at this year's spring event at a price of around US$3,000 (Rp45 million). The company hopes to reduce prices for the second generation of the device.

The device will compete with products like the virtual headset and mixed reality (mixed reality) Quest Pro of Meta Platforms launched late last year for 1,500 US dollars (Rp22.8 million).
