JAKARTA - Microsoft announced to shut down the AltspaceVR service, the social virtual reality platform it acquired in 2017, on March 10, 2023.
When it was first launched, the AltspaceVR vision was to create a place where people from all over the world could connect and socialize in real time, and become a fun place for immersive games.
"As we look into the future, we see opportunities for VRs to evolve beyond consumers into business and now have a bigger goal: a more open, accessible and secure version of immersive experience in the metaverse," the AltspaceVR team said in a blog post first discovered by The Verge.
We have some sad news, Altspacers. #AltspaceVR is shutting down on March 10th. Though we hate saying goodbye, we also feel such pride and gratitude for all the magic that happened here. ✨Thanks for joining us on this epic adventure. #socialvr https://t.co/peCwpaaBl3

However, to achieve this, the team has finally made a difficult decision to stop the AltpaceVR platform, and shifted the company's focus to support Microsoft Mesh-backed immersive experiences.
"This decision is not easy because it is a platform that many people like, provides a place for people to explore their identity, express themselves, and find communities," he said.
However, the AltspaceVR team said that with Mesh, they aspire to build a platform that offers the widest possible opportunity to all involved, including creators, partners, and customers.
Ahead of the shutdown, the company will encourage many creators and developers to become part of the AltspaceVR community to host final events and download their content.
This closure does not mean the company will quit in the world of the metaverse, but the next metaverse project will probably be their collaborative product with Microsoft Mesh.
"We look forward to what comes, including the launch of Microsoft Mesh, a new platform for connections and collaboration, starting with enabling workplaces around the world."
