Apple MagSafe Reportedly Coming For Android Phones

JAKARTA - Soon all Android phones can charge wireless power like the iPhone 12 with MagSafe. Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has launched Qi2, Qi's successor to wireless charging who borrowed a few tricks from Apple's charging.

The purpose of the WPC, especially if it's not to create an integrated system that can work with Android and Apple devices. The WPC in the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) explained, Qi2 will replace Qi's current standards that have existed for more than 13 years.

Qi2 is built from MagSafe technology included with the iPhone 12, using a similar magnetic system and wireless charging coil, dubbed Magnetic Power Profile. Qi2 will ensure the device is automatically aligned with a charger base using an internal magnet.

This is to improve power efficiency and faster charging speed. Moreover, Qi2 will help extend device battery life due to less heat generated during the process.

"Just as important, Qi2 will greatly reduce the TPA waste associated with replacing cable chargers due to disconnected plugs and pressure on cables from connection and daily termination," said WPC executive director Paul Strufsaker.

Launching Engadget, Thursday, January 5, the first version of Qi2.O will be launched this year with 15 watt charging support, foreign object detection and more.

Magnetic Power Profile will also make improvements easier. In the future, that standard can increase charging levels past 15 watts and can be used on wireless charging in unusually shaped accessories, such as uncompatible pieces of current flat charger pads.

However, Qi2's road is still long because authentication is still needed and manufacturers may refuse charging from uncertified devices. It is claimed, Qi2 will arrive this 2023 holiday season.
