JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) together with the Criminal Investigation Unit of the National Police today updated a memorandum of understanding or MoU in order to make digital space cleaner during the 2024 General Election (Pemilu) later.
Wakabareskrim Polri Asep Edi Suheri stated that this memorandum of understanding was intended to update a previously existing memorandum of understanding between the National Police and the Ministry of Communication and Information on December 20, 2017, regarding security and law enforcement in the field of Communication and Information.
"This update aims to improve coordination in the context of synergy of functions in the field of communication and information between the Police and Kominfo," Asep said at a press conference at the Kemenkominfo Office, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, January 4.
"With the following scope, data and information exchange in the expansion or use of electronic information or electronic documents that have prohibited content, namely in the form of assistance in handling, law enforcement as well as the provision and utilization of facilities and infrastructure, as well as capacity building and utilizing human resources," he added.
Asep said, of course, through this new agreement, he hopes to be able to jointly create a healthy, clean and productive digital space for Indonesia.
Kominfo Minister Johnny G. Plate also said the same thing where a new agreement was needed which referred to the last election in 2019 to maintain the process of implementing and output of elections or the results of legitimate elections in the digital space, in particular.
"We need to ensure that the election organizers, in this case the KPU, DKPP, Bawaslu, are running well. Supported by the maximum participation of election participants and residents," said Johnny.
"For this reason, the government takes part in carrying out its duties to provide election organizers with the order to take place as mandated by the Election Law," he added.
Furthermore, Asep also explained that the digital space is a forum for Presidential Candidates (Capres) to promote themselves because they are able to channel information quickly and easily, allowing people to interact directly.
However, what needs attention is how this digital space is really used responsibly.
"One of the things that needs to be noted is based on a survey by the Ministry of Communication and Information in 2019, it was found that 67.2 hoaxes or fake news were related to political issues that were dominated by social media. This must be a shared learning," said Asep.
"In the 2024 election, candidates (candidates) must take responsibility for using digital space, namely fighting against each other for work programs, vision and mission as well as positive ideas so that there is no polarization and the public can judge objectively," he concluded.
