JAKARTA - Changing the age of actors for characters in films is quite difficult by using makeup or makeup, but now Disney researchers have found a solution by developing an artificial intelligence (AI) system.

Dubbed Face Re-aging Network, or FRANK, this tool is able to make actors look younger and also older. Amazingly, FRAN is claimed to accelerate the process of visual effects that take weeks to complete if done manually.

Disney says that its AI only takes five seconds to implement the effects of aging on one frame.

"AI is doing a lot of hard work, and that crucially complements traditional reaging techniques that have worked well in film production," wrote Disney researchers in an accompanying paper.

FRAN looks much more convincing, as the AI tool works by coating changes, such as wrinkles, to certain parts of the face detected older or younger, while allowing the remaining parts to remain unchanged.

This is done on a separate layer, allowing artists to truncate and add results with hands. Disney claims FRAN is ready for production.

Citing Engadget, Friday, December 9, but for FRAN to be as effective as this, researchers must first create their own database of thousands of randomly created faces, which they then change using existing age modification tools.

The amount of surface volume generated and later changed, produces abundant materials to train FRAN. Apart from saving time, FRAN is also claimed to be able to save millions of dollars.

Because making an actor look aging is usually an expensive and tiring process that requires them through frame-by-frame scenes to change character appearance manually.
