Elon Musk Asked By The European Union To Protect Twitter Users From Hazardous Content Or Block From His Country!

JAKARTA - EU Commissioner for digital policy Thierry Breton warned Elon Musk where Twitter needs to step up steps to protect users from hate speech, misinformation, and other harmful content.

This was conveyed by Breton so that Twitter avoids violations of new rules that threaten tech giants with large fines or even bans in 27 countries. The new rule is known as the Digital Service Act, which will take effect next year.

Breton told Musk earlier via video call yesterday to discuss Twitter's readiness to face legislation, which would require tech companies to better monitor their platforms from content promoting terrorism, child sexual abuse, hate speech, and commercial fraud.

"Twitter must implement a transparent user policy, significantly strengthen content moderation and protect free speech, overcome disinformation with determination, and limit targeted advertising," Breton said.

This new digital rule has made Europe a global leader in a push to control the power of social media companies, potentially creating a clash with Musk's vision for a more free Twitter.

However, Breton said he was pleased to hear Musk regard the new EU rule as a reasonable approach to implement around the world.

"All of this requires adequate AI and human resources, both in volume and skill. I look forward to progress in all of these areas and we will come to assess Twitter's readiness at the site," Breton said.

Breton added that Musk agreed to allow the European Union to conduct a "Stress Test" on Twitter for compliance with the Digital Services Act earlier next year.

Testing, which will be carried out at Twitter's headquarters in early 2023, will provide many opportunities for Twitter to make changes to meet the legal deadline and prepare an independent audit of the company's practices.

Launching CNN International, Friday, December 2, the meeting between Breton and Musk followed a previous discussion conducted by the two last May, in which Musk expressed support for European regulations.

In addition to EU surveillance, Twitter could also face additional pressure in the United States (US), the Twitter headquarters is located.

At a conference Wednesday, November 30, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she miscarried when she previously said there was no basis to investigate Musk's acquisition of Twitter, including a disbursement of funds from a Saudi Arabian prince.

Now, Yellen said it might be appropriate for the US Investment Committee (CFIUS) to review Musk's Twitter takeover as soon as possible.
