JAKARTA - In the midst of competition for 5G phones, MediaTek wants to be one of its players by launching a new Dimensity 1080 chipset.
"Continuing MediaTek's legacy in optimizing power and performance, Dimensity 1080 offers a complete series of advanced features that challenge expectations about what 5G smartphones can do," said Deputy General Manager, Wireless Communications Business Unit at MediaTek, CH Chen.
Starting from the improved camera capabilities compared to its predecessor, Dimensity 920. This new chipset can handle image data from sensors to 200MP (previously 108MP) with Image Signal Processor (ISP) that supports video coding of 4K HDR, and quad-camera concurrency.
The 5G chipset was built on N6 6nm TSMC manufacturing nodes and has an octa-core CPU, with two ARM Cortex-A78 cores with a clock of up to 2,6GHz and six ARM Cortex-A55 clocks of up to 2GHz cores.
The GPU is Arm Mali G68. Dimensity 1080 also supports LPDDR5 memory and 3.1 UFS storage module.
Launching GSMArena, Wednesday, October 12, from the aspect of performance, benchmark scores may not see a significant jump compared to before.
There are no special features for new games, where Dimensity 1080 also has HyperEngine 3.0 such as Dimensity 920 and chipsets still support the same sub-6GHz 5G, Wi-Fi 6, and AI Processing Unit (APU) networks.
MediaTek says smartphones powered by 5G chipsets will be available in Q4 2022. Because the chipset has some of the same hardware and software as the Dimensity 920, the company can speed up marketing time.
