JAKARTA A conglomerate from India, Tata Group, is now active in talks with Taiwanese supplier Wistron Corp, to establish a joint venture to assemble Apple's iPhone in India. The news was first reported by Bloomberg News on Friday, September 9.

The effort will be the latest push for Indian met-to-ware groups into technology manufacturing for leveraging Wistron expertise in product development, supply chain, and assembly.

Apple, headquartered in Cupertino, California, has made a huge investment in India since starting iPhone assembly in the country in 2017 via Wistron and then with Foxconn. This is in line with the support of the Indian government to improve local manufacturing.

However, according to a Bloomberg report, it is not known for certain whether Apple is aware of the talks.

The plan could result in Tata's group buying equity in a Wistron operation in India or both companies building a new assembly plant, or executing both measures.

If the talks materialize, Tata will have the ability to make Apple products like iPhones in the country. This could increase Apple's sales in the world's second-largest population country.
