A Peek At The Line: A Futuristic City Worth IDR 7.5 Quadrillion Made By The Government Of Saudi Arabia, Here's What It Looks Like!

JAKARTA – Saudi Arabia plans to build a future city called The Line. Later The Line will be built vertically, the city will fully use renewable energy.

In 2021, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman revealed the country's plans to build The Line, a smart linear city that will be built vertically, has no roads or cars and uses purely renewable energy.

Recently, the government of Saudi Arabia has released a rendering of The Line. The city is designed to be only 200 meters wide, 500 meters high and 170 kilometers long. The city of the future will house various communities. The entire city will be encased in a glass facade that stretches along the coast. The Line is predicted to accommodate up to 9 million residents.

Designer artist The Line envisioned a city where public facilities were only a five-minute walk from settlements. The facility will be a meeting place for residents to carry out various activities.

Although The Line is not equipped with roads and cars, the city will only have high-speed trains for end-to-end transit which will be covered in just 20 minutes. The city will also use a natural ventilation system to ensure its residents enjoy the ideal climate.

“The designs revealed today for urban communities that are vertically shaped will challenge the traditional flat city, the horizontal city and create a model for conserving nature and improving people's lives. THE LINE will address the challenges humanity faces in today's urban areas and will shine a light on alternatives to life," said Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, quoted from Endgadget.

The Line is part of the USD 500 billion Mega-City Neom project (approximately IDR 7.5 quadrillion). The futuristic city is currently being built in Tabuk province, Saudi Arabia.

However, the development of this project is not free from controversy. The reason is, around 20.000 people will be forced to move from Tabuk province for the construction of The Line. While the displaced population consists of the indigenous Huwaitat tribe.

“At the launch of The Line last year, we committed to a revolution of civilization that puts people first based on radical changes in urban planning,” said Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The ambitious future city project was designed by NEOM, which is a development project for the Saudi vision 2030. For your information, The Line is NEOM's first project. NEOM is owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, of which Prince Mohammed bin Salman is chairman.
