JAKARTA - Tumblr is one of the most popular social networking and microblogging platforms on the web, even after banning adult content in 2018. This free service is mainly supported by ads, and now Tumblr will offer a premium subscription option to remove ads.

Users can opt out of advertising on their desktop and mobile apps by paying US$4.99 per month or purchasing a year of ad-free browsing for a discount of US$39.99.

Of course, this feature is optional and users who don't want to pay can continue to use Tumblr for free with the ads still rolling.

Tumblr founder David Karp was against allowing ads, and once the company stuck to that principle, Tumblr was plagued by cheesy and cheesy-looking ads flooding the feed and often nonsensical, even ad-blocking mechanisms don't usually affect native mobile apps.

However, after the company was sold in 2013, it introduced advertising as a way to generate revenue. Now, anyone who still uses Tumblr can have an ad-free version of the site, but if they pay for it.

Users can register by clicking on the Ad-Free Browsing tab in the account settings. Tumblr uses the payment processor Stripe, so companies don't have direct access to credit card information or other payment methods.

Tumblr says ad-free subscribers may still see sponsored posts from other Tumblr users, in the same way sponsored messages on YouTube videos don't go away with YouTube Premium, but featured posts from Tumblr itself will be hidden.

This new subscription is quite different from Twitter's new premium offering, Twitter Blue, in that it only adds a few rather useful features. It doesn't remove ads unfortunately, but it costs a lot less than ad-free Tumblr, at $2.99 per month.

Of course this is the future for Tumblr, and it would be great to develop more new features that cost nothing, and a new blog viewer on the dashboard.

The social network is known to quickly lose users after banning adult content on the platform. Luckily for those who still use and love Tumblr, they can now have an ad-free experience.
