JAKARTA - Tony Hawk launched a replica of the Iron Maiden skateboard painted by Kurt Cobain's hand to raise money for charity.
Hawk bought the original version of the skateboard, which features artwork for Iron Maiden's album The Killers, in last year's auction.
The skateboard was painted by Nirvana's frontman Cobain in 1985 and after the auction, Hawk traced its authenticity.
On Monday, the skateboard legend released a series of replica skateboards on Cobain's 56th birthday as well as prints and stickers from the design, where the results will be used to raise awareness of mental health and to build skateparks.
Writing on Instagram, Hawk said: To better understand the origin of the 'unicorn' skateboard I got last year, I went to Seattle to get a live story from Cameron Ross (the original owner).
With the inspiration of @thespacewitch [France's Bean Cobain] and the help of @dupedupe, we offer a photorealistic version of this deck in the form of actual skateboards, prints, and stickers. We made it real with the original Phillips shape and the OG truck hole, and added a KC & JP signature to the top graph.
All proceeds from this sale will be divided equally between the Jed Foundation and The Skatepark Project to provide resources for those struggling with mental health, and to create more public skateparks in underserved areas. Kurt and Jeff's influence is still echoing in our world, so we hope to honor their legacy with these unique items."
To buy one of the skateboards, you have to spend up to 420 US dollars or the equivalent of IDR 6.4 million.
