Entering The Electrification Field, Volvo Will Not Sell Burning Engine Cars By 2030

JAKARTA - Swedish automotive company Volvo has announced it will sell its entire electric car line globally starting from 2030.

At a time when other manufacturers are looking for a safe option while still launching gasoline and hybrid cars, then developing hybrid technology, such as BMW and Toyota, Volvo will sell electric cars in the future.

"Volvo will not sell a single car that is not an electric vehicle after 2030, regardless of the market," Bjorn Annwall, Volvo's Chief Commercial Officer, said on Thursday, June 8.

Nevertheless, Volvo is also aware of the risks to the decision that could potentially lose sales. However, they are also focusing financial and human resources on a single powertrain giving the company the best opportunity to produce attractive EV products.

"The last time I saw, it was a very strong growing market, and ICE was a shrinking market. To be successful, you have to focus on the growing market part," said Anwall.

This was also agreed upon by Volvo CEO Jim Argentan. He believes that the best way to move forward for the Swedish-based car manufacturer to go further into the future is to immediately switch from combustion engine to electrification.

"Are you going to invest in an internal combustion engine in 2029? Maybe we will make a little sacrifice, but I think we get more than we sacrificed", Isn said.

The manufacturer also plans to launch at least five new EVs by 2026. Also planned, Volvo will introduce luxury electric minivans for the Asian market, apart from turning the S60 and S90 sedans into electric power.

Violvo recently released a compact SUV under the name EX30 which is one of the manufacturer's electric cars. EX30 comes with three different powertrain options and two different types of batteries.

One option is the Single Motor Extended Range variant with a long-distance battery NMC featuring lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt, and generating energy more efficiently than the LFP variant. This single motor's long-range option gives up to 480 km of charging.
