JAKARTA - Anemia, or a condition of lack of blood, is one of the health challenges that women often face.

According to data from the Indonesian Health Survey in 2023, the prevalence of anemia in Indonesian women is 18 percent. Meanwhile, in the population of pregnant women, the highest occurs in the age range of 25-44 years, which is around 30-40 percent.

Anemia can be said to be a condition in the body with hemoglobin levels (Hb) in the blood lower than normal. In women who are not pregnant, anemia is expressed when the value of hemoglobin is less than 12 grams/dL.

The low levels of hemoglobin (Hb) in the blood, as the main characteristic of anemia, can cause various symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, firelike views, and decreased concentration.

These symptoms certainly have a significant impact on the quality of life of women, especially those who have multiple roles in families and careers.

"Various symptoms of anemia can certainly limit the space for women to move in their daily activities," said Medical Manager of Kalbe Consumer Health, dr. Helmin Agustina Silalahi, in a talk show The Importance of the Role of Iron in Supporting the Daily Movement of Women with Kalbe and Sakatonic Activ, in Jakarta, recently.

Given that the prevalence of anemia in Indonesian women has reached an alarming number, especially among pregnant women, preventing this condition is something that needs to be considered.

Doctor Helmin said, one way to prevent this is to pay attention to every nutrient the body needs in their daily lives.

Many understand the importance of iron in preventing anemia, but the body's nutritional needs do not stop there. Apart from iron, there are various other nutrients that also play an important role, such as:

1. Folate acid

Folic acid plays a role in the formation of healthy red blood cells. This lack of nutrients can worsen the symptoms of anemia, especially during pregnancy, where the body's needs increase.

2. Vitamin B12

This vitamin helps produce DNA and red blood cells. Without sufficient intake, the bone cord cannot produce adequate red blood cells.

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps absorb iron in the body. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges or peppers, can increase the effectiveness of iron intake.

4. Vitamin B Complex

Vitamin B, including B6 and B9, supports the body's optimal function and plays a role in energy metabolism, which is often disrupted in people with anemia.

5. Other minerals

Zinc and copper are also needed for a healthy blood formation process, although in small amounts.

"Asam folates, vitamin C, vitamin B, and other minerals are needed, both to overcome anemia, support the recovery process, pregnancy period, and maintain overall body health," added doctor Helmin.

Furthermore, to prevent anemia, women need to ensure a balanced and diverse diet. Consumption of iron-rich foods such as red meat, fish, and green vegetables, combined with foods rich in vitamins and other minerals, is very important.

In addition, avoiding the consumption of tea or coffee close to meal times can help absorb nutrition more optimally.

According to Sakatonic Manager, Sindi Marta Tila, prevention of anemia requires a holistic approach, either through food or supplements. Supplements offer flexible alternatives for those who find it difficult to meet nutritional needs only from food.

"With more attention to diet and nutrition, women can maintain their blood health, support daily activities, and prepare the body for various phases of life, such as pregnancy and childbirth. Through proper nutritional fulfillment, women's health can continue to be improved," concluded Sindi.
