JAKARTA - In order to welcome the 2024 Christmas celebration, St. Cathedral Church. Maria in Palembang City, South Sumatra, presents a five-meter high Christmas tree made from used plastic bottles.

ThePastur Parish of Santa Maria Palembang Cathedral, Petrus Sukino, explained that the Christmas tree is the creative work of Catholic youth. This work not only has aesthetic value but also contains important messages about environmental conservation.

Petrus said that the process of making the Christmas tree made from plastic waste took up to one month. During that period, the Palembang Catholic youths worked together to produce a maximum work.

Over the past month, young Catholics in Palembang have worked together to make Christmas trees from plastic waste. This is also a symbol of our concern for the environment," he said, as quoted by ANTARA.

For this year's Christmas Mass, the Palembang Cathedral Church has prepared the capacity to accommodate up to 1,500 congregations.

"All congregants who want to take part in the Christmas mass are welcome to come without any differences in treatment. We welcome all with open arms," added Petrus.

The church has also collaborated with the police and the TNI to ensure safety during Christmas celebrations in Palembang.

In this Christmas celebration, Petrus hopes that this moment can bring joy and peace even though economic conditions are facing challenges. This is in line with the Christmas theme this year, namely 'Sehati and Sepuhin.'
