JAKARTA - Lloyd Morrisett, co-creator of the educational series Sesame Street, has passed away at the age of 93. The news was announced by Sesame Workshop on Tuesday, January 24 local time.

An Honorary Guardian Gives Life, Lloyd leaves a very large and indelible legacy among generations of children around the world," wrote Sesame Workshop in a statement on Twitter.

Joan Ganz Coney, Morrisett's co-worker who co-founded "Sesame Street", said that Morrisett was the first person to have the idea of teaching basic skills of preschoolers on television.

"He has been a trusted partner and a loyal friend of mine for more than fifty years, and he will be missed a lot," Cooney said in the statement.

Citing The Hollywood Reporter, Morrisett was the one who pushed for the birth of Children's Television Workshop (CTW) which was formed in March 1968.

Quoted from ANTARA, the CTW organization was later better known as the Sesame Workshop. The Sesame Street series debuted on November 10, 1969 with the first season watched by more than six million children aged 3-5 years in the United States.

Sesame Street is known as the world's largest edutainment program capable of reaching tens of millions of children and families in more than 140 countries each year. The children's series won five Hotel Awards and nearly 200 Emmy awards.

Selain Sesame Street, Sesame Workshop juga membuat acara lain termasuk program edutainment The Electric Company yang didirikan oleh Morrisett bersama Joan Ganz Coney, dan Paul Dooley.
