JAKARTA - Eleven IPEKA INTEGRATED Christian School (IICS) junior high school students managed to make international achievements at the 2022 World Scholars Cup (WSC). The IICS team won first place in the 2022 WSC final round, titled Tournament of Champions at Yale University, United States.

This achievement also succeeded in making the IICS Team get rid of tough competitors from the United States, Canada, United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia in an event attended by around 1,800 students from 60 countries.

The IICS team consisting of eleven junior high school students consisted of seventh, eightth, and nineth grade students with the age range of 12-14 years. Although the eleven IICS students are participating in this international event, during their journey the IICS team managed to collect dozens of trophies or trophies and medals at the 2022 WSC.

In the WSC Global Round preliminary round in Bangkok, September 2022, the IICS team won a total of 21 trophies, 80 gold medals, and 21 silver medals. Meanwhile, in the final round or WSC Tournament of Champions held at Yale University in November 2022, the IICS team won a total of six trophies, 39 gold medals, and 32 silver medals.

This year, the Indonesian team through IICS won first place Overall Champion Team in the Junior Division category. The first winning team is a hybrid team from the IICS and ACS International Singapore schools, namely Audrey Effendi (ICS), Caitlin Valencia Yong (IICS), and Jayden Christian Budiman (ACS International Singapore).

Junior & Senior High School Administrative Principal IICS, Engelina Sutantio welcomed the IICS champions on Friday, December 9, 2022 at a thanksgiving ceremony at the IICS School, West Jakarta. In his remarks, Engelina expressed her pride for IICS students who excel at this international level.

"We are of course very grateful to God, and very proud of the achievements of our students. It is truly an extraordinary achievement. We believe the experience at the WSC event hones them in various interaction and teamwork skills, as well as the persistence to do their best in preparing for their end goal. We also really appreciate our parents who have been so supportive to date, "said Engelina.

One of the winners of the 2022 WSC Junior Division category from IICS, Audrey Effendi revealed many valuable and proud experiences gained from this event. In this competition we not only learn new things from the WSC curriculum, but we can also meet friends from various parts of the world. The most unforgettable and proud moment was when we saw the Red and White flag flying on the Yale University stage, said Audrey.

World Scholar's Cup Competition Mechanism

The World Scholars Cup (WSC) is a prestigious international competition that not only tests students' academic abilities, but also provides opportunities to meet and socialize with other students from different continents and countries. In this competition, students are not only invited to get to know more about various issues in the world, but also to train their cohesiveness in one team.

The WSC has been held since 2007, then starting in 2012, the final round of the WSC or Tournament of Champions competition will be held at Yale University which is one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. The WSC competition begins with the selection of Regional Round, which allows participants or students to participate in this competition in their respective countries. After passing this selection, participants are entitled to participate in the WSC competition in the global or Global Round event.

In 2022, the WSC competition will be held live or offline. WSC Global Round is held in five world cities namely, Dubai, Prague, Bangkok, Nha Trang, and Cape Town. If they qualify in the Global Round round, participants will be invited to enter the final round, namely the WSC Tournament of Champions at Yale University. This year the WSC Tournament of Champions will be held on 11-16 November 2022. The IICS team this year successfully passed the eleventh members of its team at the Global Round, Bangkok to the final round of the WSC Tournament of Champions, even being the best team in this competition.

There are four fields tested in the WSC competition, namely Collaborative Writing, Scholars Challenge, Team Bowl, and Team Debate. Collaborative Writing requires each participant to write an essay or poetry from the choice of the theme given. In Scholars Challenge, each participant is given a double choice based on the WSC theme curriculum that year. This year the theme raised is A World Renewed and below this theme there are six areas that participants must study, namely Special Areas, History, Social Studies, Science & Technology, Art & Music, and Literature & Media.

At Team Bowl, the team's or each team is given a clicker to answer questions given within five seconds. As for Team Debate, each team must be able to provide strong arguments in the debate competition to win the given motion. Teams with the highest combined score of the four areas will be the winners of the competition.
