Tips Teaching Children To Be Socially Medium From Psychologists

JAKARTA - Parents have an important role to play in teaching children to be wise in playing social media to prevent negative impacts so that they are still able to develop themselves.

"The proper use of social media can increase personal growth, happiness, and expand the world by making the right connection," said Psychologist from the University of Indonesia A. Kasandra Putranto as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, September 26.

Kasandra said, one thing parents can do is ensure that children interact with uploads and pictures they see on social media positively. Also make sure that people who are connected to children on social media are those who are able to provide positive values and teachings.

"Speaking of good and bad things done on social media such as bullying or spreading false information," said Kasandra.

In line with Kasandra, psychologist Samanta Elsener separately also said that parents do need to positively direct their children to play social media, such as ensuring that the accounts they follow on social media are accounts that have a positive impact on them.

"For example, they are still in school, try following accounts related to their schools, which teach about learning math, public speaking, hobbies, balls, all kinds of things related to their preferences," said Samanta.

"We also need to teach our children to filter and choose the content they properly consume according to their age," he added.

In addition, Samanta also said it is important for parents to invite their children to do a detox or limit access to social media so that they do not depend on their mental health balance.

"David, for example, for a week no one plays on social media or gadgets. That is a very good first step to do," said Samanta.

"This detox is very important because it can clean up anything that we have consumed from social media so that it can be more balanced, emotions will also be more stable and feel even more prepared to consume social media," he said.
