JAKARTA - As a young director and just debuted with the work Kukira Kau Rumah, Umay Shahab did not expect his film to be warmly welcomed by the audience. The film, starring Prilly Latuconsina, has reached one million viewers in just 4.5 days in theaters.

Umay admitted that he did not believe in this achievement. Standing up to tears of emotion was his response when he saw that number.

"The first one is definitely happy, very happy. I suddenly cried. When I saw the numbers I didn't cry immediately, I was stunned for a moment, then I cried loudly," he said during a virtual conversation, Wednesday, February 9.

As a player and producer, Umay immediately contacted Prily. "I told Prilly, bacot does come true. We often talk strangely, we make films with large audiences, and that's what happened," said Umay.

Not wanting to get carried away with numbers, Umay concentrated more on seeing the audience's response after seeing the film. For him, whether the message is received by the audience is more important.

"Numbers have never been the most important orientation for me, so sometimes I still focus on looking at people's reviews on Twitter or in the letter box. So if you say you are really happy, yes. But are you satisfied, not yet. There are still many things to pursue," he said. .

The film Kukira Kau Rumah is a different youth spectacle. This film tells the story of Pram (21 years), a lonely young man, since middle school his father has died, and his mother is busy working. Pram fills his days by playing music and composing songs while working at a music cafe. Until then, Pram knew Niskala (19 years).

Pram was then close to Niskala, and one thing that Pram did not know at that time was Niskala, who is bipolar. Niskala actually studied secretly without the knowledge of his father, Dedi (50 years old). Niskala's only goal was to prove to his father that even with his illness, Niskala would still be able to excel.

The film Kukira Kau Rumah appears surprisingly, out of the genre of teenage casual stories. This premiere film made by Umay Sahab flows smoothly and is easy to enjoy. But the message to be conveyed can be captured easily without patronizing.

"Many reviews that touched me, some said I woke up at 4 in the morning thinking about the film, felt that it relates to the story. For me it means that the feeling I want to convey is meaningful. What I did, the tiredness paid off. paid off. We are tired at the location as expected," he said.

Not wanting to be complacent, the man who was born on February 16, 2001 admits that his film is not perfect. There are many things that still need to be improved.

"There are indeed some flaws in the film. I was 19 years old at the time, I was still learning that I didn't have a background in the film industry. I was still new," he explained.

The pros and cons of the audience's opinion were well received. "Indeed, the story is between yes and not well conveyed," he said.

"Yes, because there are those who say that this is mental health and others. But others have a normal response. Whatever we make, there must be pros and cons in society," he explained.

There are also those who question the lack of detail on the bipolar information presented. "Some say it's just bipolar, there's no valid explanation. It's like being said, that's okay. If you need an original definition of bipolar, you can look it up in books or in consultations," he suggested.

Despite receiving criticism, Umay did not back down. For him it is a form of audience love who wants to make it more advanced.

"What I want to make is that the material is heavy, but how do I convey it so that it's light, and not deep. This is just initial knowledge that I'll tell you, let people find out more about the skin on their own. Other people said that at first I was crazy because I dared to lift it this is the theme," he explained.

Umay Shahab is happy because through the film I guess you are home, people have more desire to study mental health. "People are more concerned and know how important mental health is, that's what I think is successful," he explained.

Director Privilege

When filming Kukira Kau Rumah in 2019, Umay Shahab was only 19 years old. It is not an easy matter but also not something difficult to do when there is an intention to learn and is supported by a supportive environment.

"I believe in becoming a director because the people around me are kind. I'm a privileged director. I didn't go through college like other directors, I didn't start from the crew from the smallest line. I didn't go through a long enough phase. I played and got the opportunity to be direct, " he said.

Having a golden opportunity, Umay doesn't want to be complacent. He learns and is not lazy to absorb knowledge from experienced people.

"Thank God I used the privileges I had to study with Monti Tiwa. Met Prilly I learned. There was Andy Rianto, I also studied," he recalled.

"Why did I dare to take this step? Because I believe that the people around me will help me. That's why there was the film I thought you were the house, so with all the distractions of a 19-year-old boy who was just learning to make films," he added.

Claiming to be sotoy aka know-it-all, Umay accepts all the criticisms he receives gracefully. For him, it's all a form of love that wants him to develop better.

"There are many things that make me feel stupid and ignorant. It's like the open ending in this film has two poles. Some people really like it, some don't understand. Some viewers have question marks, that's a form of my stupidity," he said.

Because of that, Umay continued to study. His first step as a director continued to become a serial director.

"I will not stop. After this I directed the series Today Why Naira? I continue my path to become a director. Actually I want to continue in the art world. With any medium I want to learn. musical. I want to be a theater director, why not?" sure.

"Just learn, I want to try something new. Art is in my area. Whatever the medium, I will definitely brush it up," he said.

What makes Umay feel proud is that one of her dreams has been achieved. "One of my dreams has been achieved, this Indonesian film will become king in its own land. Alhamdulillah, finally you. This house has 4500 show times a day, compared to foreign films that are currently showing, it is much higher. As with any film, I hope that Indonesian films will dominate. cinema," he hoped.

Umay Shahab believes that Indonesia has a lot of potential for young people who excel. They just need to be given the opportunity and belief.

"If there is a director's regeneration later, I hope that the community supports it. I do not deny that there will always be pros and cons to any debut. I hope that the community supports it, so it's not just the statistics. If the environment is supportive, the regeneration will continue," he said.

"When I am 31 years old, I hope there will be another 19-year-old child who will make his first film. I hope that the community will be more supportive," he said.

Do not want to be trapped in the acquisition of numbers, quality remains the main goal of Umay Shahab's work. "Going back to numbers has never been my orientation, if it's a burden to make better ones, yes. But when it comes to numbers, I'm not a burden. For God's sake, I thought you were a house. My expectations are only 100 thousand viewers per month. I don't have expectations. nothing. I can just show the film, I'm grateful. There's never been a burden about numbers, but quality," he said.

Umay thanked him for the support he received. "Thousands of thanks, millions of thanks to the audience of Kukita Kau Home. Whatever you feel, thank you for my first work. I hope Indonesian films continue to be kings in their own land. Always be kings in their own land," he hoped.

Despite being young, Umay's concern about what is happening in society has always been a concern for Umay. If I thought you were Home taking bipolar photos, Umay would like to include social issues in each of his works in the future.

"Definitely photographing social issues in Indonesian society. I have the opportunity to speak out, I hold the request, I am in control when the film is shown in theaters. And I can't just let the opportunity slip away without inserting something that is hot in the community," he said.
