Michelle Yeoh Starring In American Born Chinese Series

JAKARTA - Actress Michelle Yeoh is lined up to be the main character in the new Disney+ series titled American Born Chinese, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Previously, Yeoh and Cretton had worked together in the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Yeoh is set to play alongside other actors such as Ben Wang, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, Ke Huy Quan, former Taekwondo champion Jim Liu, and Sydney Taylor. The series is produced by 20th Television for Disney Branded Television. American Born Chinese will begin production this month in Los Angeles, United States.

Quoted from Deadline on Tuesday, February 8, the series was adapted from the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang of the same title. The series will be written by Kelvin Yu, who also serves as executive producer and showrunner.

Apart from directing, Cretton also serves as executive producer of American Born Chinese. He also worked with Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan, Erin O'Malley, Gene Luen Yang, and Asher Goldstein who also served as executive producers.

In this series, Yeoh plays the character of an aunt named Guanyin. Quoted from ANTARA, he helps his nephew Wei-Chen (played by Jim Liu) to face the challenges of high school in America while maintaining his secret identity as a Buddhist.

The American Born China series will focus on the character Jin Wang (played by Ben Wang), an ordinary teenager who is able to change his high school social life much like the warmth of a family.

Wang's parents are immigrants from Taiwan. Wang had a struggle within him about his social and cultural identity while living in America.

In addition, there is also Yeo Yann Yann who plays Jin's mother named Christine Wang. This character is strong-willed and opinionated and loves his family very much. While Chin Han plays Jin's father, Simon, a father and husband who is hardworking and loyal in his work.
