JAKARTA - Economic uncertainty to tightening global supply chains is a challenge in the future, including for Indonesia.

The figure of a presidential candidate (candidate) and a vice presidential candidate (cawapres) who understands the economy is considered necessary to be an option.

Executive Director of the Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Mohammad Faisal said that Indonesia's future development is determined by the understanding and paradigm of the economy, which is good from the presidential or vice presidential candidates.

Furthermore, Faisal said, this understanding and paradigm of the economy is very important for Indonesian leaders to have in the face of increasingly tough challenges ahead.

"In my opinion, it is very important to have not only a vice presidential candidate, but also a presidential candidate with an understanding and economic paradigm because it will determine future policies," said Faisal, in Jakarta, Wednesday, October 18.

Not only that, Faisal assessed that this understanding of the economy must also be followed by the right economic paradigm and in accordance with Indonesia's characteristics.

"Just understanding may not have much effect on policy changes if it is not followed by a paradigm that is in accordance with Indonesia's characteristics," he said.

Furthermore, said Faisal, mistakes in seeing problems will also have a fatal impact on the Indonesian economy in the future.

"Often between one principle and another, they collide even though they are both economic principles, for example related to efficiency, equity, aspects of justice, MSMEs, and employment. This needs understanding in seeing economic problems," said Faisal.

Similarly, Apindo Advisory Council Chairman Sofjan Wanandi hopes that the elected vice presidential candidate will have qualified capacity and capability related to the economy.

Sofjan said that the business world hopes that at least the understanding of the vice presidential economy can help the leadership of the next president.

The reason, continued Sofjan, is that none of the three presidential candidates for 2024-2029 have a strong understanding of the economic sector. Meanwhile, the challenges of entrepreneurs in the future are in the economic sector.

"Looking at the three candidates who are the top of all surveys, I see that most of them are not people who understand the economy properly. Whatever we hope that the vice president will be someone who understands the economy, because our challenge for the next five years is the economy," he said.

Sofjan said, understanding of the economy is also important in maintaining the sustainability of Indonesia's development. With good economic capabilities, Indonesia can face global uncertainty and threats to Indonesian commodities from other countries such as the European Union.

What we hope that entrepreneurs can really bring our economy better because of our problems, I see it is very difficult to deal with global and domestic problems. We know that many commodities have decreased, not to mention there is an threat to el nino," said Sofjan.

According to Sofja, to anticipate future challenges, it is necessary to have close cooperation between the government and business actors

"We have to help to solve this together because whatever happens to our economy, this entrepreneur suffers the most, of course our people too, so we have to lift this issue," he said.
