Violating The Capture Zone Boundary, KKP Orders 3 Fishing Boats In Aru Sea Waters

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has brought order to three fishing vessels in the State Fisheries Management Area of the Republic of Indonesia (WPPNRI) 714 Aru Sea Waters Next to the West Kei Besar.

The Director General of Marine and Fishery Resources Supervision (PSDKP), Adin Nurawaluddin, said that the control was carried out because the three ships were operating not according to the Fish Fishing Area (DPI).

Adin said, from the results of the inspection at the time of the termination of the ship by the Marine and Fisheries Monitoring Vessel Shark 14, the three ships with the area's permit were suspected of catching fish outside their fishing zone, which was above 12 nautical miles.

"We immediately ordered it as a repressive step for the KKP for the continuation of persuasive efforts that are being carried out intensively," said Adin as quoted from the KKP official website, Thursday, August 3.

He said, in addition to controlling fishing vessels through the Supervisory Ship operation, the KKP through the Directorate General of PSDKP had collected data on regional permit ships that were suspected to often operate above 12 miles.

Moreover, this is in accordance with Government Regulation (PP) Number 5 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Risk-Based Business Licensing, ships with regional permits are only allowed to operate up to 12 nautical miles.

Thus, Adin emphasized that if a fishing boat with a regional permit wants to operate above 12 miles, it is mandatory to comply with the laws and regulations by migrating to become a central permit.

"We have ordered 22 fishing vessels caught by the Supervisory Ship to migrate permits. We also carry out socialization and a persuasive approach to fishermen so that they immediately migrate to central permits," he said.

Furthermore, Adin said as of July 30, 2023, as many as 818 fishing vessels spread across 14 UPTs of the Directorate General of PSDKP had been encouraged for licensing migration. Of these, 466 fishing vessels have been recorded as having been processed for business licensing migration.

This is a follow-up to the implementation of the Circular Letter of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries) Number B.701/MEN-KP/VI/2023 concerning Migration of Business Licensing for Fish Fishing Subsectors and Business Licensing for Fish Transportation Subsectors.

"Arrangement of this fishing zone is an important thing to do so that catch fish can be in accordance with the quota for permits for their fishing areas. Thus, fishing activities can be controlled and free from overfishing," he concluded.
