Pelindo Collaborates With UAE To Develop Belawan Port, Expands Indonesia's Logistics Range

JAKARTA - Belawan Port Capacity in Medan, North Sumatra (North Sumatra) will be enlarged. With the development of this port, ma'am will expand Indonesia's logistics reach.

Later, Belawan Port will increase its container storage capacity, from 700,000 Teus to 1.4 million Teus within 8-9 years.

The development of Belawan Port is carried out in collaboration between PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) and a logistics company based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), DP World and Indonesia Investment Authority or INA.

DP World CEO, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said cooperation with Indonesia would expand Indonesia's logistics reach. He also targets cargo from Belawan Port to be sent directly to the Pacific region, Australia, New Zealand, to the East Asia region.

"This will allow cargo to go to the Pacific, to Australia or New Zealand, or to Europe, or to the Fareast. Indonesia is an amazing location," said Ahmed, at the Ministry of SOEs, Jakarta, Friday, June 23.

Similarly, Chairman of the Board of Directors of INA, Ridha DM Wirakusumah said that through this collaboration, cargo shipments from Belawan Port will not need to stop by the hub in Singapore, or Tanjung Pelepa Port in Malaysia.

"We are currently a feeder for Tanjung Pelepas, a feeder for Singapore. DP World tells us why we throw it at neighboring countries? If possible, just go ahead. It will be facilitated by DP World," said Ridha.

Meanwhile, the President Director of Pelindo, Arif Suharrtono, said that the Belawan Port operational cooperation will be carried out for the next 50 years.

The development of port capacity is targeted to take 8-9 years. Currently, the required investment is estimated at 400 million US dollars or around Rp. 6 trillion.

"So the cooperation between Pelindo INA and DP World, is to operate terminal contenters in the fight which are collaborated for 30 plus 20 years, the current capacity will be developed up to 1.4 million," he said.
