YOGYAKARTA The swallow's nest is one of Indonesia's best-selling export commodities in the international market. The destination country for the export of swallow's nest uses this commodity as a raw material for traditional medicine as well as skin care.

According to a report by the National Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the export of swallow's nest from Indonesia will reach the level of 517.44 million US dollars (equivalent to Rp7.8 trillion) in 2021.

This figure is down 4.24 percent compared to the previous year which reached 540.4 million US dollars (equivalent to Rp. 8.2 trillion).

Meanwhile, the export volume of swallow's nest in 2021 is up to 1,324 tons.

This figure increased by 14 percent when compared to the previous period which was 1,157 tons.

In 2022, the export value of swallow's nest will reach IDR 23 trillion with an export volume of 1,502 tons.

Head of the Agricultural Quarantine Agency (Barantan) of the Ministry of Agriculture Bambang said that one of the main destination countries for the export of swallow's nest was China with a total of 19 percent.

Bambang added, throughout 2022, swallow's nest exports reached 1,502 tons. This commodity is in demand by 24 countries, including China.

"With fairly strict export requirements, 33 exporters are able to fulfill it. And of course we have an interest in increasing the number of exporters who can qualify by providing assistance and supervision," said Bambang at the Ministry of Agriculture Building, Jakarta, Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

Bambang explained that Indonesia's swallow nest exports have continued to soar in the last three years.

In 2019 the export of swallow nests reached 1,131 tons, 2020 to 1,157 tons, 2021 to 1,324 tons, and 2022 then reached 1,502 tons.

The export of swallow's nest to China has decreased in 2021, because there is a swallow company that is subject to temporary suspension by the Agricultural Quarantine Agency (Barantan) for violating standards in the General Administration of Customs of the people's Republic of China (GACC) protocol.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Animal Animal Animal and Security Quarantine Center, Wisnu Wasesa, revealed that as of December 2022, Indonesia had exported 288 thousand kilograms (kg) of wallet nests to China. This figure is equivalent to 19 percent of the total export of wallet nests to various countries.

Currently, Indonesia's challenge to expand in the international market is because the majority of the swallow's nest consumers are ethnic Chinese.

"Our current challenge is to convince ethnic Chinese even though it is in America, Australia," said Wisnu.

"For Asian markets, the highest exports to Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia. Some are consumed in the country and some are exported back to China," he added.
