Minister of Trade Zulhas Orders 2,300 Tons of Steel Worth IDR 32 Billion Produced by PT Long Tern Iron and Steel That Does Not Meet SNI

JAKARTA - The Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan ordered 2,300 tons of reinforced concrete steel that did not meet the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) worth IDR 32 billion which were produced by PT Long Teng Iron and Steel in Tangerang Regency, Banten.

"If it doesn't meet the standards, it will be withdrawn from circulation. The amount is quite large, as much as 2,300 tons of reinforced steel and concrete", said the Minister of Trade in Tangerang Regency, Banten, as quoted from Antara, Thursday, January 12.

On this occasion, the Minister of Trade together with a team from the Indonesian National Police and the Ministry of Industry reviewed the steel which was deemed not to meet the SNI.

"The SNI has already determined how much, how strong it is. So, that is not by the standards that have been set", said the Trade Minister.

According to the Minister of Trade, steel reinforcement is one of the products whose distribution is important to monitor, because it concerns the security and safety of consumers in the country.

For this reason, SNI is a reference for steel production and must be fulfilled by all industries in Indonesia.

“This is very dangerous because it involves public safety. Therefore, we give administrative sanctions, namely annihilation", said the Minister of Trade.

The Minister of Trade added that 40 other steel industries produce similar products and do not meet SNI. For this reason, the Minister of Trade will take firm action against this.

“There are 40 of this type in Tangerang. We have to regulate this because it is not up to standard,” said the Trade Minister.

The Director General of Consumer Protection and Trade Order (PKTN) of the Ministry of Trade, Veri Anggrijono, said that the public needs to be aware of steel products that do not comply with SNI.

"The public must be more vigilant, not to choose a steel that is not up to standard because of the low price. To construct a building, it is necessary to ask for the SNI certificate, whether it is available or not to guarantee security and safety", said Veri.
