PT PLN (Persero) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of updating the estimated electricity demand in 2060 to achieve net zero emissions.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said this collaboration was also part of the accelerated energy transition study in Indonesia.

"We hope that the MoU studies the acceleration of the energy transition with JICA will be able to analyze information about issues and policy actions to achieve net zero emissions by 2060," he said in a written statement, Thursday, November 3.

Darmawan explained that the collaboration between PLN and JICA is also expected to produce a stable electricity system planning with the use of new and renewable energy.

Not only that, both parties agreed to sign the MoU as a basis for accelerating the Energy Transition in Indonesia according to the capabilities, experience and resources in its field, by exchanging data and through coordination with stakeholders to support the interests of the study.

JICA is the implementing agency for Japan's official development assistance or Official Development Assistance (ODA) with the aim of supporting socio-economic development, recovery or economic stability in developing countries.

Darmawan added, PLN opens the widest possible collaboration to deal with energy crises and climate change.

This collaboration is important, considering that strategic alliances are absolutely necessary to build national energy capacity in order to develop environmentally friendly generating technology whose goals are related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate change and quality infrastructure.

"Towards net zero emissions 2060, technology is needed that can replace fossil plants to bear the basic burden and support system stability, including electricity supply for remote or archipelagic areas," he concluded.
