JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conduct a trial of using ammonia as a substitute fuel for coal (co-firing) at steam power plants (PLTU) and utilization of hydrogen as a substitute for natural gas (co-firing) at steam and gas power plants (PLTGU) managed by PLN Group.

"This collaboration is carried out to support the government's efforts to accelerate the energy transition in Indonesia by increasing the mix of new and renewable energy (EBT) and suppressing carbon emissions in the electricity sector," said Director of PLN's New Renewable Project and Energy Management, Wiluyo Kusdwiharto in a statement to the media, Thursday, November 3.

Wiluyo explained, through this agreement PLN and MHI will conduct a joint feasibility study (joint feasibility study) High Ratio Biomass Co-firing Scale Up for PLTU Suralaya units 1-4, Co-firing Amonia (NH3) for PLTU Suralaya units 5-7 and Co-firing Hydrogen (H2) for the M701F fleet in Tanjung Priok managed by PT PLN Indonesia Power, PLN subholding in the generating sector.

With this collaboration, it is hoped that there will be an in-depth study regarding the increase in biomass co-firing and the implementation of ammonia co-firing for PLTU and hydrogen co-firing for the M701F gas turbine managed by PLN Indonesia Power.

Furthermore, PLN Indonesia Power will provide access to information related to units that are used as objects study (PLTU Suralaya and PLTGU Priok) and MHI will support in the technical feasibility and economic study of its implementation.

"For the implementation of the potential for cooperation in this feasibility study, it will then be discussed and agreed in the form of a separate agreement or a memorandum of understanding regarding further detailed conditions," he explained.

He also said that this would be a new chapter in the use of various energy sources in PLN's generation. If this is successful, it will have a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions from PLTU owned by PLN.

"We thank Mitsubishi for its support for PLN in its efforts to create a greener and cleaner environment," concluded Wiluyo.
