JAKARTA - Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Sri Mulyani emphasized that the issue of climate change is one of the government's priorities in preparing long-term development plans. According to him, climate change has significant consequences for the survival of the community.

“The issue of climate change is a global problem and is a concern for Indonesia. Indonesia's exhaust emissions have increased by 4.3 percent every year since 2010. This condition has had a major impact on warming, which has increased by 0.03 percent of degrees,” he said when speaking at the G20 dialogue entitled Sustainable Finance, Thursday, July 14.

The Minister of Finance added that the situation that had occurred had even reached the level of society that if not managed, it could potentially threaten the lives of many people.

“On the other hand, 65 percent of Indonesia's population lives in coastal areas. Sea level rise due to warming occurs 1 cm to 1.2 cm per year. This of course will have an impact on a lot of people living there,” he said.

For this reason, the state treasurer stated that the government has a strong concern in overcoming the impacts caused by climate change.

“We ensure that commitment to the issue of climate change is very important. The government is also trying to produce policies and regulatory instruments that can support these efforts,” he said.

For information, Indonesia is targeting a 29 percent reduction in carbon emissions with its own efforts, and 41 percent with international cooperation.

Through this strategy, a budget of at least US$365 billion is needed to achieve a 29 percent carbon reduction. Meanwhile, the 41 percent target is believed to cost no less than US$495 billion.
