JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) continues to push for a balance between the growth of the manufacturing sector and environmental sustainability.

In the midst of the positive growth of the non-oil and gas industry sector of 3.67 percent with the absorption of labor increasing by 1.2 million people, the Ministry of Industry also continues to strive for the national industry to transform into a green industry.

"Through this transformation, we hope that the manufacturing sector will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning green energy to a carbon neutral and green economy in Indonesia," said Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in a statement to the media, Thursday, May 19.

To run a green industry, Agus continued, two strategies can be implemented, namely greening the existing industry (greening the brown industry) and creating new industries according to the principles of the green industry (developing the new green industry).

To accelerate the implementation of a competitive green industry, the Ministry of Industry has priority programs such as increasing production and resource efficiency, developing environmentally friendly raw materials (green materials), and green products.

Furthermore, acceleration of implementation is also encouraged through energy efficiency and the use of clean energy, as well as new and renewable energy (EBT), reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and waste, efficiency and water security in the industrial sector, implementation of circular economy and 4R (reduce, reuse, recycle, and recovery), as well as the improvement and expansion of green jobs (Green Jobs).

"We hope that the priority programs that have been carried out can continue to improve the competitiveness of the industrial sector without compromising the function of the environment and ensuring public health," said Agus.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Standardization and Industrial Services Policy Agency (BSKJI) of the Ministry of Industry, Doddy Rahadi added, in order to create an environmentally friendly industry, the Ministry of Industry's BSKJI has compiled nine key initiatives in green industry policy, namely the preparation of green industry standards and certification (SIH), industry awards (PIH), as well as the greenhouse gas reduction and low-carbon development (PRK) program.

Then, accelerating energy, water, and NRE efficiency, proposing fiscal and non-fiscal facilitation, implementing a circular economy, developing green industrial areas, developing green SMEs, and finally developing new and green industrial services.

"Throughout 2021, there are 152 industrial companies participating in the green industry program, with the achievement of energy savings equivalent to IDR 3.2 trillion and water saving equivalent to IDR 169 billion," said Doddy.

Doddy added that the Ministry of Industry also continues to encourage fiscal and non-fiscal facilitation programs and policies for businesses that are committed to supporting the strengthening of green industries on an ongoing basis.

"Thus, it can be a catalyst for accelerating the growth of the green industry towards an inclusive and sustainable green economy, to increase the competitiveness of national industries globally," he concluded.
