Manchester United Now Focuses On Avoiding Relegation After Defeat Against Newcastle

JAKARTA - Manchester United lost again. Newcastle United humiliated them at Old Trafford in the 19th week of the 2024/2025 Premier League, Tuesday, December 31, 2024, early morning WIB.

There are no more grandiose ideals that the Red Devils carry besides staying in the Premier League aka avoiding relegation.

The defeats in the last four matches in all competitions, three of which were consecutively in the Premier League, changed the goals of Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim admits his focus is on survival by now only seven points from the relegation zone.

"I think (the team) are a little out of direction at the moment. So, it's a bit embarrassing to be Manchester United's coach and lose a lot of games."

"However, we have to face difficult times in everyone's life. So, this is a difficult time."

"I think people are tired of the reasons at this club. I think sometimes I talk about relegation because of that."

"We have to acknowledge our position as you can see that every team can beat any team."

"So we have to win the game and focus on survival. I think the club needs surprises, you know? We need surprises and have to understand that," Amorim said after the game.

Manchester United trailed 0-2 when the game had only been running in the first 20 minutes through goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton.

Amory responded by replacing Joshua Zirkzee after 33 minutes. The Dutchman was ridiculed all over by the hosts' supporters when he left the field.

"It was a very difficult moment (for Zirkzee) and he was a human being. I am responsible".

"When you have moments like this, especially in big clubs, you work very hard to turn things around, especially when you don't have much time to train the basics to overcome difficult moments."

"It was a very difficult moment. We had to fight for the next game and apply the idea to win the game."

"I think it's very difficult for everyone and you can feel it on the pitch. With a lack of training and lack of confidence after so many defeats and some difficult moments, you conceded some goals early in the game. Then it was very difficult during the game," said Amorim.

The defeat to Newcastle saw Manchester United experience their worst points in a calendar year in the Premier League.

The Red Devils are now ranked 14th in the standings with 22 points from 19 matches.

Next, their journey is getting steeper because they have to travel to the headquarters of leaders of the Liverpool standings on Sunday, January 5, 2025.
