Maguire's Blunder Makes England Team Suffering, Gareth Southgate Defends His Team

JAKARTA - England coach Gareth Southgate has set up again for his player, Harry Maguire. This follows the player's blunder which caused Three Lion's troops to fail to get full points.

The England national team drew 3-3 against Germany in Group C UEFA Nations League on Tuesday, September 27 in the morning WIB.

In that match, Maguire's name was also in the spotlight again because it was considered the cause of England's two goals behind.

First, Maguire gave a penalty to Germany because of the reckless tackle of Jamal Musiala. Ilkay Gundogan's success was completed as a goal for Germany.

Maguire was again in the spotlight when he lost the ball too easily so he was taken by Musiala and passed to Timo Werner and then scored into Kai Havertz's goal.

Inevitably, the British fan ridiculed the Manchester United player. Many asked Southgate to leave him at the 2022 World Cup later.

However, the coach defended. He stepped on what Maguire was doing.

"I know everyone will focus on Harry Maguire, but there are a number of very important moments that Harry Maguire has shown in the last two games," Southgate said as quoted by Sky Sport.

"He's also another example of an amazing footballer. So what should we do, not vote for him and Luke Shaw because he doesn't play much or we have to choose players who can show the performance you see today?" Southgate added.

British performance at the UEFA Nations League itself is being discussed. The team nicknamed The Three Lions has never won in six matches.

So far, Southgate's team has only recorded three draws and three defeats. In fact, England is one of the favorite teams to win the 2022 World Cup.

"It always raises debate, but I think at this moment we all have to support the best players and our experienced players, except that we are in a situation that is almost impossible to choose them," said Southgate.

"I have to accept there will be a lot of excitement, both about individuals and team selection. But I'm not going to change my mind. I think the players are determined to do that (win)."

"They know the more we play together, the more comfortable we will be. I think there is a positive signal in the last two matches," concluded Southgate.
