JAKARTA - Eight local contestants who will compete in the main event of the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang 2022 have finally been selected. Of the eight names, the 2014 Rip Curl Cup winner Made Widiarta was included.

The surf athlete, nicknamed Garut, finished eighth in the Rip Curl Cup Trials. He almost failed because he got two small points in the first half.

He also had time to think about giving up, because he didn't get the right waves to score a better score.

"I almost gave up because there were no waves in the first 20 minutes, I even started thinking about swimming back to the beach before finally some waves started to arrive and I immediately changed my mind. I have to continue," said Widiarta in a written statement.

When he got a perfect wave on his first wave, he got up. He then got a score of 8.5 which made him confident.

"When I swam again I got a 5.5, I think it was my lucky day. I'm so happy to qualify and can't wait for the main event!" he exclaimed.

Made Adi Putra "Bol" became the best in the Rip Curl Cup Trials. He achieved a total score for two near-perfect waves of 19.45 points (out of a total of 20 points).

"To be honest I was surprised, because I thought this competition wouldn't happen, but then the tide came!" said Made Adi Putra.

"I am very happy to be able to enter the main event, because next month I will be turning 42, I hope to be the champion of the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang as my birthday present," he added.

Later, eight surfers who enter the main event will compete with international athletes who get invited. The names of the athletes will be announced at the opening ceremony to be held at Padang-Padang Beach on July 31.
