JAKARTA – Badminton player Greysia Polii officially hangs up her racket as an Indonesian professional. The farewell ceremony was held lively at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Sunday, June 12.

Present at the event entitled "Greysia Polii Testimonial Day" were the General Chairperson of PBSI Agung Firman Sampurna and the Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali.

“We have to let Polii enter her retirement period as a professional badminton athlete. Thank you for your struggle, keep on contributing to this nation and country," said Firman in his speech.

Even though she officially announced her retirement today, Greysia Polii has not appeared with her partner Apriyani Rahayu in various championships since the All England 2022.

Greysia announced that she was leaving the badminton world that catapulted her name after bringing home the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the women's doubles event with Apri.

"There are only three words for Greysia Polii: intelligent, multitalented, relentless champion spirit," said Firman.

The decision to hang up the racket also ended Greysia's journey as an athlete in the PBSI National Training Center in Cipayung after 19 years. During that time, she often changed partners from the mixed doubles and women's doubles sectors.

At its peak, she was paired with Apriyani who together achieved the highest achievement in Tokyo last year.

"It doesn't mean she's gone from badminton. She's a fighter. She never backs down and proves that she's a professional athlete," said Amali.

At the farewell event, Greysia played her last match in an exhibition match with other professional athletes.

Joining the event were Hendra Setiawan, Jonatan Christie, Tai Yzu Ying, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Wang Chi-lin, Sapsiree Taerattanachai, and Yuta Watanabe.
