JAKARTA – Manchester United has officially appointed Erik ten Hag as their new coach. The 52-year-old tactician will take up his new position at Old Trafford from next season.

Ten Hag was brought in to take over the position currently held by interim coach Ralf Rangnick. Ten Hag was offered a three-year contract with an option to extend it one year.

"It is a great honor to be appointed manager of Manchester United and I am very excited about the challenge ahead", said Erik ten Hag.

"I know the history of this great club and the passion of the fans, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of giving them the success they deserve."

Ten Hag will become Manchester United's fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

United director of football John Murtough said the appointment of ten Hag was the right decision. The coach is considered to have proven himself with the current club Ajax Amsterdam.

"Over the last four years at Ajax, Erik has established himself as one of the most attractive and successful coaches in Europe, renowned for his attractive attacking football and team commitment to young players", he said.

Ten Hag has taken over as Ajax coach since December 2017. During his tenure he led them to the semi-finals of the 2018/2019 Champions League and almost to the final had Tottenham Hotspur not won through Lucas Moura's decisive goal.

Currently Manchester United is sixth in the league standings with five games remaining this season. They are three points behind Tottenham Hotspur who occupy the last place in the top four.
