Canada Qualifies For World Cup After 36 Years Out

JAKARTA – The Canadian national team has confirmed themselves to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup finals. This will be their first appearance at the quadrennial event in the last 36 years.

Canada got tickets to Qatar after they beat Jamaica 4-0 at BMO Field, Toronto, on Sunday, March 27 local time or Monday morning Indonesian time.

The win means Canada is certain to finish in one of the top three places in the final phase of the Concacaf zone qualifiers.

Atiba Hutchinson is the only member of Canada's current squad who was just three years old when their national team last qualified for the World Cup. This year, at the age of 39, he will captain his country in the next tournament.

Canada made their last appearance at the World Cup in 1986 when Mexico hosted it. At that time they did not qualify for the group stage after occupying the bottom position without scoring a goal.

In the match against Jamaica Cyle Larin and Tajon Buchanan brought Canada 2-0 up in the first half. Meanwhile, the next two goals were each scored by Junior Hoilett and an own goal by Adrian Mariappa.

With the addition of three points, Canada sits at the top of the Concacaf qualifying standings. They have collected 28 points followed by the United States in second place with 25 points from 13 matches played.

In addition, the United States and Mexico also ensured themselves to qualify for Qatar. America recorded beat Panama and Mexico beat El Salvador to lock the top three places standings that automatically qualify for the World Cup.

As for Costa Rica, they had to struggle in the play-offs after Panama suffered a defeat. Currently, Costa Rica is still in fourth place in the standings or 3 points behind America and Mexico, who have the same points.

Costa Rica will play the winner of Wednesday's Oceania qualifier final between the Solomon Islands and New Zealand.
