JAKARTA - Serbian Parliament officially accepts the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic. There is a 30-day deadline for forming a new government or holding an impromptu general election.

Vucevic, head of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and ally of populist President Aleksandar Vucic, resigned on January 28.

Vucevic's withdrawal amid protests sparked by the collapse of a roof at a train station in the northern city of Novi Sad in November 2024 that killed 15 people.

More than 100,000 protesters took to the streets in Beogard on Saturday last week, as one of the biggest protests in decades.

Protesters say the train disaster is a symptom of widespread corruption and mismanagement, which the government denies.

Under the constitution, President Vucic now has 30 days to propose a new prime minister appointed to lead the government until 2027.

"The Serbian parliament has acknowledged the resignation of the Prime Minister and the government's mandate is over," parliamentary spokesman AnaBRacic said.

"The deadline for the new government is midnight April 18", he continued.

If Vucic fails to appoint a new prime minister within the specified time limit, elections will be held within 45 to 60 days.

The parliamentary session, which began on March 4th and made Vucevic's resignation a final agenda, was undermined by violence as opposition lawmakers protested the government and supported student demonstrations.

The national protests rocked Vucic, who has held power since he became prime minister in 2014 and president in 2017.

Protests that began in Novi Sad in November have spread throughout Serbia.

It is unclear how Vucic's allies will face the situation if an impromptu general election is held.

In December, the IPSOS Strategic Marketing survey institute said SNS received support from 48.3% of voters, although popular sentiment towards the government has increased since then.
