YOGYAKARTA The chaos of the management of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) is in the spotlight of many parties. The election of Jusuf Kalla (JK) in the PMI Nasioal Deliberation (Munas) for the period 2024-2029 was marked by small ripples because Agung Laksono, who also ran as a candidate for General Chair, actually formed a rival National Conference.

Quoted from the PMI website of Semarang City, the history of the establishment of PMI has actually started since the Dutch colonial period. On October 21, 1873, the colonial government established the Red Cross in Indonesia under the name Nederlands Rode Kruis Afdeling Indie (Nerkai), which was later dissolved during the Japanese occupation.

In 1932, DR. RCL Senduk and DR. Bahder Djohan pioneered the establishment of the Indonesian Red Cross. The plan received broad support, especially among Indonesian educated circles. They tried to bring the draft to the Nerkai Conference in 1940 even though it was finally rejected rawally. Finally, the design was stored while waiting for the right opportunity.

During the Japanese occupation, they again tried to establish the National Red Cross Agency. However, these efforts failed again.

On September 3, 1945 or 17 days after the proclamation of independence, President Soekarno issued an order to form the National Red Cross.

Based on the instructions from the President, Dr. Buntaran, who at that time served as Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, formed a Committee 5 consisting of Dr. R. Mochtar (Chairman), dr. Bahder Djohan (author), and dr. Djulana; dr. Marzuki; dr. Sitanala (member).

On September 17, the Indonesian Red Cross Association was successfully established. Mohammad Hatta was appointed as PMI's first general chairman.

PMI started its activities by helping victims of the war of the revolution of independence and the return of prisoners of war. For this performance, PMI received recognition from the International Red Cross Committee (ICRC) on June 15, 1950, by becoming a member of the ICRC.

After that, PMI was accepted to be a member of the 68th National Association by the Red Cross Association League on October 16, 1950.
