JAKARTA - The DPR has hosted the 9th Mikta Speakers' Consultation. In addition to leading the running of the parliamentary consulting forum for the 5 middle power countries, the Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, will invite 4 other MPs to meet with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

"The meeting of MPs for MIKTA members with President Jokowi is part of the commitment that parliament is ready to actively contribute to synergizing with the Government in overcoming various international problems," said Puan, Monday, November 20.

MIKTA is a group of middle power countries consisting of Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia. While the Mikta Speaker' Consultation is a consulatory forum for the Speaker of Parliament members of the MIKTA.

Before opening the 9th Mikta Speakers' Consultation, Puan together with the leaders of the Mexican, South Korean, Turkish and Australian parliaments will meet with President Jokowi at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta. The MIKTA parliament's high-level meeting itself will be held at the Kempinski Hotel, Jakarta.

"Today's consulting forum will formulate how the MIKTA state parliament can strengthen cooperation in facing world challenges," explained Puan.

The meeting between the parliament members of MIKTA and President Jokowi is important considering that previously a meeting had been held for the leaders of MIKTA member countries. President Jokowi even chaired the MiKTA Leaders 'Gathering meeting which was held for the first time since MIKTA was established, on September 9.

At that time, President Jokowi emphasized that the current very complicated global challenges must be faced with collaboration and cooperation between countries. Puan said that parliament is determined to be part of the solution to global problems with the Government.

"There is a need for cooperation between the Government and parliament to ensure that every global problem can be resolved for the welfare of the people," said the first woman to serve as Chair of the DPR RI.

As the host, the Indonesian House of Representatives carries the theme Strengthening Multilateralism, Intergenerational Challenges' at this year's MiKTA Speakers' Consultation. There are 3 aspects that are prioritized during Indonesia's chairmanship at MIKTA, namely strengthening multilateralism, inclusive recovery, and digital transformation.

The three issues are a priority for the DPR in this MiKTA parliamentary consultation forum. The theme taken by the DPR aims to discuss long-term issues, which have cross-generational impacts," explained Puan.

According to the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, the MiKTA consulting forum will formulate how the MIKTA state parliament can strengthen its cooperation. This collaboration, said Puan, also includes the parliament and the governments of each MIKTA country.

"The parliament is determined to work together with the Government in overcoming challenges that have not yet begun," added Bung Karno's grandson.

At the 9th Mikta Speakers' Consultation, Puan will directly lead discussions with the parliament of MIKTA countries. The discussion will be divided into three sessions. First, the session with the theme 'Global Governance of Government: How Parliament Must Act'.

Second, a session to discuss Commitment to Climate Change. Then the third session, entitled 'How to Use the Power of the Young Generation: Towards a Better Future'. On the sidelines of the discussion, Puan will also hold a meeting with several MPs who are members of the MiKTA.

Puan said that the 9th Mikta Speakers' Consultation would also discuss how changes in international relations, regional tensions, and the evolution of international norms could affect global geopolitical dynamics.

The Indonesian-led MIKTA parliamentary forum will also discuss how the world can accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target or Sustainable Development Goals.
