JAKARTA - Based on increased data on freshwater seed traffic, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) assesses that the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) has the potential to become a supplier for freshwater fisheries in Indonesia.

"As of September 25, our crossing data recorded 75.6 million seeds issued from Yogyakarta," said Acting Head of the Fishery Products Safety Quality Control and Supervision Agency (BP2MHKP) Ishartini in a written statement received in Jakarta, Saturday.

Ishartini said, based on traffic data from the Yogyakarta Fish Quarantine, Quality Control and Safety Products (BKIPM), tilapia, bawal, patin, gurami, shrimp to ornamental fish reached 95.8 million seeds in Yogyakarta in 2021. Meanwhile, in 2022 there was an increase of 38 percent or recorded to 132.7 million seeds.

He also projected that figure will continue to increase, considering that the fresh water fish treatment business is getting higher. Some of the dominant freshwater fish seed commodities include tilapia, baul, patin, gurame, shrimp and ornamental fish.

"If you look at the trend of seed traffic in the last few years, we estimate that it will continue to rise," he also said.

Furthermore, his party as the executor of quality assurance (QA), continues to implement the fish health insurance system as well as the quality and safety of upstream-downstream fishery products.

Including the seeds of the fish to be distributed, he said that they must meet the requirements for standard biosecurity and quality, health and security guarantees in accordance with the mandate of Presidential Instruction Number 1 of 2017.

Similarly, Member of Commission IV DPR Budhy Setiawan saw the growth of fish seed traffic in Yogyakarta as a positive thing.

"The fisheries sector has a large contribution not only to providing jobs for the community but also to contribute to food security, in this case as a provider of animal protein sources for very affordable communities," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, September 30.

Deputy Regent of Sleman Kustini Sri Purnomo assessed that the visit of Commission IV of the DPR RI and the KKP represented by BP2MHKP was a motivation for local governments to advance agricultural, fishery and environmental potential for the welfare of the community.
