Mount Ibu In Malut Erupts, People Are Prohibited From Activities At A Radius Of 3 Km

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) revealed an eruption in the form of ash ejection as high as approximately 1.5 kilometers out of the crater of Mount Ibu in North Maluku.

Officer of the Mount Ibu Monitoring Post, Ahmad Basuki, in a statement received in Jakarta, Monday, said the eruption occurred at 07.12 WIT with a gray thick ash column heading northeast.

"The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of approximately 1 minute 36 seconds," he said.

Ahmad said the threat of an eruption is still far from residential areas, which are six to seven kilometers from the crater of the volcano.

Mount Ibu has an alert status or level II from December 10, 2013 until now. PVMBG noted that the volcano in northwest Halmahera Island experienced 33 eruptions from January 1, 2023 to September 25, 2023.

Mount Ibu is a volcano with a volcano strato type which has a height of 2,825 meters above sea level located northwest of Halmahera Island, North Maluku.

The top of the mountain is a volcanic crater. The crater center is one kilometer wide and 400 meters deep, while the outer part is 1.2 kilometers wide.

PVMBG asks the public not to move within a two-kilometer radius and to expand sectorally within 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of the active crater of Mount Ibu.

"If there is ash rain, people who are active outside the home are advised to use a nose, mouth (mask) and eyes (glasses)," concluded Ahmad.
