Minister Of Health Budi Calls The Cleanest Air In Jakarta In The Afternoon

JAKARTA - Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin highlighted the problem of poor air pollution in a number of areas, including DKI Jakarta. He said the cleanest air quality was not in the morning, but actually occurred in the afternoon. "I also just found out that if we think the cleanest morning the air is a big mistake. It turns out that the cleanest PM2.5 is from 4 to 5 pm," said Minister of Health Budi in a Working Meeting with Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Wednesday, August 30. Minister of Health Budi explained that the clean air in the afternoon occurred because the cold stratosphere or atmosphere layer fell down and held the pollutants near the surface. This resulted in PM2.5's concentration getting higher at night until early morning. Budi said this phenomenon with an inversion layer. He explained that the inversion layer is a warm atmospheric layer above the cold atmospheric layer. Normally, said Budi, the atmosphere temperature will depend on height, so that the colder atmospheric layer is above a warmer layer. However, in the inversion layer, atmospheric temperature conditions are inversely proportional to normal ones. In that layer, the warm atmospheric layer is above the cold atmospheric layer, therefore it is called inversion (reversal). "Because at night the stratosphere will go down so that the PM2.5 is below night because it is cold," he explained. Therefore, the Minister of Health appealed to people who want to exercise better not in the morning, but in the afternoon. "So instead we ran that morning and ran with high PM2.5 pollution. So when it's hot, it develops, goes up, so actually the cleanest thing is from 4 to 5 o'clock. So if you want to run, don't run in the morning, it's better to run in the afternoon," he continued. In addition, Minister of Health Budi also recommended the public to use KF94 or KN95 masks as protection against air pollution. "So what can be a PM2.5 loud mask because this is the smallest. If Feli's mother wears a mask, please, ma'am, but wear the KF94 or KN95," he said.
