Earthquake M6.4 Yogyakarta Triggered By Subduction Activity Of Indo-Australian And Eurasian Plates

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the earthquake that rocked the Bantul area, Yogyakarta, Friday, June 30, was a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said the earthquake was triggered by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian Plates.

"By paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was an intermediate type due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian Plates," said Daryono in Jakarta.

He said the results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that the earthquake had an upward movement mechanism.

He also said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 8.63 south latitude and 110.80 east longitude, or to be precise 86 km southwest of Bantul located at sea at a depth of 25 km.

"The results of the BMKG analysis show that this earthquake has updated parameters with a magnitude of M6.0," he said, as reported by Antara.

BMKG informed that the incident that occurred at around 19.57 WIB did not have the potential for a tsunami. "Be careful of aftershocks that may occur," said Daryono.
