JAKARTA - Coordinator of Human Rights Advancement Subcommission (HAM) of the National Human Rights Commission Anis Hidayah said that the use of nails as a tool for voting on elections could endanger people with mental disabilities.

"We convey that related to the voting tools that use the nails, mental disability friends endanger themselves, including those around them," Anis said in a webinar entitled "The Acceleration of the Young People with Disabilities Group in the 2024 Election in the Principle of Human Rights", quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, May 30.

Therefore, for Anis, general election organizers (elections) need to think about alternative tools that can be used by people with mental disabilities.

"It takes affirmation how then there are alternative tools that can be used, that do not endanger their safety, voters with mental disabilities and those around them," said Anis.

In addition to physical facilities and infrastructure, Anis also revealed that Komnas HAM found that there were still many families who had not dared to report their family members who had disabilities. "Especially those in remote villages and areas," he said.

This problem has an impact on the number of people with disabilities and people with mental disabilities who have not recorded population identity.

For Komnas HAM, currently the focus of data collection on persons with disabilities is still around people who are in social institutions.

"So data on people with disabilities and people with valid mental disabilities in various regions is difficult to obtain," said Anis.

The data held by the government and election organizers is not valid enough to represent the number and distribution of persons with disabilities and people with mental disabilities.

Therefore, Komnas HAM recommends to the KPU to compile a voter database that is included in the category of vulnerable groups that can be updated in real time and periodic.

"Coordinate with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, the Directorate General of Dukcapil of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Social Affairs," said Anis.
