In The Aftermath Of Two Children Being Treated By Defects, KPAI Asks For Nurses' Knowledge In Palembang Plus

PALEMBANG - The aftermath of the case of nurses who were negligent has caused two pediatric patients in Palembang to suffer physical disabilities. The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) asked the Provincial Government of South Sumatra (Sumsel) to facilitate advanced training programs for nurses.

"The advanced nursing training facility is one of the recommendations from KPAI in response to two cases of alleged negligence in handling pediatric patients by hospital nurse officers in the local area," said Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) Dr Jasra Putra, quoted by ANTARA, Monday 27 February.

According to Jasra, the two cases of alleged negligence occurred at the Muhammadiyah Hospital, and the Central General Hospital of Dr. Moh Hoesin Palembang, a few weeks ago.

The first case was experienced by an eight-month-old baby girl whose left hand was cut off, by an unscrupulous nurse at the Muhammadiyah Hospital when she was about to remove the IV bandage, February 3, 2023.

To note, the case of cutting the baby's finger ended peacefully through a restorative justice process between a nurse, with the initials DA, and the victim's parents who were facilitated by the Palembang City Police.

Then the second case occurred to a junior high school (SMP) student, with the initials CY (14 years), February 4, 2023.

At that time, CY had to undergo a second operation because he had an injury near the reproductive system due to the first venture surgery to be carried out. As a result of this incident, CY's family sent a summons to the hospital on suspicion of malpractice.

After the second operation was completed, February 7, 2023, the management of the Central General Hospital, Dr. Moh Hoesin, reported that CY patients showed congestion.

The two cases of health care for children made us (KPAI) provide assistance here. All related parties were invited. One of the results, we recommend to local governments to facilitate this continued training," he said.

According to him, further training is important for hospital nurses or other health centers so that they can improve medical service skills for pediatric patients.

What's more, it is known that according to representatives of the nursing union organization management, midwives in the local area admitted that such continued training was still minimal for them.

Things like this need to be done. We will coordinate this with the Governor. The two events may be viral, we don't know what the Puskesmas level is like. Don't repeat it again," he added.

In addition, he said, KPAI advised local governments to implement Regional Regulations related to Child Protection which already exist in full response to the two incidents of alleged negligence.

"In this case, the local government not only pays attention to the health of patients but also their education to the economy of their families after experiencing an incident of alleged negligence of unscrupulous nurses," he concluded.
