Mahfud MD Gets The Title 'Daeng Malempu', The Term From The Bugis Means Smart, Honest, And Reliable

JAKARTA - Makassar State Islamic University (UINAM) Chancellor Hamdan Juhannis officially gave the title to the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Human Rights (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud Mahmodin 'Daeng Malempu'.

"Daeng Malempu means straight, has integrity. His name is Daeng Malempu, his academic spirit has never been lost but always resides with academic thoughts, (political-law, ed.)," said Hamdan as quoted by Antara, Sunday, February 26.

According to him, the title of Daeng Malempu in the term Bugis means smart, honest, and reliable.

The awarding of the title, he said, was certainly not arbitrary, because there were several considerations and in accordance with the figure in Mahfud MD.

He stated that UINAM's main focus on becoming the best campus, especially on campus in terms of financial management, is one of the best universities and there is no budget leakage.

"Let's take advantage of tonight, the night is full of blessings, we can listen to his thoughts and ideas, especially related to legal politics so that later the city can contribute to this country. Because whatever our profession is, it is part of the history of this country," he said.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD on that occasion expressed his gratitude for being given a good title. He said Islamic campuses are now getting better than before.

"In the past, Islamic campuses were considered a second-class campus from Iain and were considered not to be commensurate with campuses such as UI (Indonesian University), UGM (University of Gajah Mada) and others. But now UIN or IAIN used to be, it's great with other national campuses in various places," he said.

This Professor of the Faculty of Law, Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) Yogyakarta even mentioned several people who graduated from Islamic campuses such as Saiful Mujani, Quraish Sihab, Nasaruddin Umar, and several other big figures.

"Now that the univeristas of Islam has become a source of pride after the reform era, some of its alumni have become figures who have played a very important role for the progress of this nation. In the past, it was not imagined, so when asked what the role of alumni will be, that's the key," said the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court.

The elected chairman of the UINAM Alumni Association (IKA) Idrus Marham added that democracy when viewed from a perspective is a kind of sign so that it becomes a rule so that the democratic process becomes much better.

"Seeing from a democratic perspective is a sign. So it is not a sign that democratic behavior does not obey signs, but it is freedom. So the presence of Prof Mahfud shows us about signs that exist in our society," he said.
