The UN Security Council Isnilai Unpowered Handling Russia's War In Ukraine

JAKARTA - The United Nations Security Council (DK PBB) is considered powerless to handle Russia's war in Ukraine and needs change.

However, Moscow's veto power makes it difficult for UN DK to unite voices. This was expressed by the chairman of the UN General Assembly Csaba Korosi, ahead of the one-year anniversary of the attack.

"We have never received such a bold protest," Korosi said at a press conference in Tokyo citing Antara.

But the president of the General Assembly said that any changes and the possibility of Russia removing from the council could lead to political and legal challenges and ultimately require changes to the UN Charter, which could take time.

Russia has used its veto rights to Security Council resolutions last year calling on member states not to recognize Moscow's declaration of annexing four regions in Ukraine and immediately withdrawing the Russian military from Ukrainian territory.

The war in Ukraine displaced millions, and Ukraine's economy shrank by more than 30 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year, as the invasion impacted economic activity.

United States (US) President Joe Biden called for expanding UN DKs, condemning Moscow without shame in violating the basic principle of the UN Charter, namely safeguarding the sovereignty and integrity of a country.

The UN DK currently has five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members selected for a period of two years.

Japan hopes to become a permanent member of the council, and is currently a non-permanent member.
