JAYAPURA - The Jayapura region in Papua has been experiencing an increase in earthquake events since January 2, according to data from the Jayapura Region V Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Center (BBMKG).

According to the Coordinator for Observation of BBMKG Region V Jayapura Danang Pamuji, more than a thousand earthquakes occurred in Jayapura City and its surroundings after the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 which occurred on January 2, 2023.

BMKG from 2 January to 9 February 2023 at 10.24 WIT  had recorded 1,055 earthquakes in the city of Jayapura and its surroundings.

"The main source of the earthquake occurred in a rock zone with properties that are brittle or easily broken so that it could trigger faults around the zone. As a result, many aftershocks were felt or not felt by the community," he said as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, February 9.

Among the earthquakes that occurred from 2 January to 9 February 2023 at 10.24 WIT, according to him, there were 120 earthquakes whose vibrations were felt by the community.

Some of the earthquakes that have occurred since January 2, 2023, in the Jayapura area and its surroundings are classified as shallow earthquakes whose centers are at a depth of below 10 km so that the vibrations can be felt by the community.

"The distribution of the earthquake itself is still around the main earthquake, which is more dominant in the North Jayapura District area. Last night's earthquake the source of earthquake was near the Angkasa area to Pasir 6," he said referring to the earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 that occurred on Wednesday (8/2) ) at 20.35 WIT.

Danang urged residents to be aware of the impact of the earthquake. Residents are advised to avoid buildings that are cracked due to the earthquake and to inspect residential buildings to ensure there is no damage that could destabilize the building before returning to the house.

"To always check and make sure residential buildings are sufficiently earthquake resistant," he said.
