Corruption Perception Index Declines, Government Prepares Improvements According to Jokowi's Directions

JAKARTA - The Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security, Mahfud MD, said the Government will make improvements after Indonesia's 2022 Corruption Perception Index (CPI) fell four points to 34 from 38 in 2021.

"Of course, we will make improvements and soon will receive specific directions as state policy from the President (Joko Widodo)", said Mahfud at the State Palace complex, Jakarta, reported by ANTARA, Monday, February 6.

Mahfud said President Jokowi held a meeting to discuss lowering the GPA based on Transparency International Indonesia (TII). Apart from Mahfud, also present at the meeting were Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, and Chair of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Firli Bahuri.

Mahfud explained that the government respects the GPA results as presented by TII. However, he added, the drop in GPA was quite surprising.

According to him, in the index for calculating TII results, eight institutions are sources of data and assessments for assessing Indonesia's IPK. Of the eight institutions, no institution is usually used as a source and assessment of Indonesia's CPI, namely the World Economic Forum (WEF).

He said that Indonesia received a high rating at the WEF, but this was not used in calculating the 2022 GPA by TII.

"There (WEF), we are high, but we are not used to counting this time. So, it's okay. We just want to state that those are not facts but perceptions and only limited to certain things", he said.
