SAMARINDA - The COVID-19 task force for East Kalimantan Province conveyed that the findings of one person who was confirmed positive for the COVID-19 variant XBB 1.5 (kraken) that occurred in Balikpapan City, East Kalimantan had been declared cured.

Spokesman for the COVID-19 Task Force for East Kalimantan Province Andi Muhammad Ishak said one positive person for this Kraken variant is a Foreign Citizen (WNA) from Poland who is an oil and gas worker.

"It is true that positive cases of COVID-19 variant XBB 1.5 (Kraken) have been found in foreign workers but now they have recovered (negative)," said Andi Ishak as quoted by ANTARA, Sunday, January 29.

Andi explained that based on the information from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Kraken variant was the result of the previous Omicron XBB derivative two-version gene cross section, namely sub-variant BA 2.10.1 and BA 2.75. These two Omicron sub-variants can exchange genes when they infect the same person at the same time.

Andi revealed that the history of the journey of the Polish foreigner who tested positive for the Kraken variant on January 6, 2023, entered Jakarta and on January 7, 2023, flew to Balikpapan.

Meanwhile, on January 12, 2023, medical officers took samples to be sent to the UNMUL Samarinda laboratory through the East Kalimantan Provincial Health Office,

"The results of the laboratory examination came out on January 19, namely positive for the Kraken variant, but previously on January 18 the person concerned underwent a PCR test the results were negative," he explained.

Andi said various efforts had been made to prevent transmission, namely tracing close contacts, then quarantined close contacts until PCR results were obtained.

In addition, coordination has been carried out between the East Kalimantan Provincial Health Office and the City of Balikpapan to strengthen surveillance, especially in international entry routes.

Andi reminded the public that the COVID-19 pandemic had not yet ended completely. However, with the Central Government's implementation of Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM), all community activities can still be carried out but still pay attention to health protocols.

"At least use masks, especially in crowds, carry out Covid vaccinations until the second booster to maintain collective immunity," he said.
