JAKARTA - Deputy Chairperson of the Gelora Fahri Hamzah Party assessed that the proportional system is open or directly elects members of the council during the election is correct.

He views that if Indonesia re-implements a closed proportional system or selects political parties (political parties) in the 2024 Pileg, political accountability will be damaged.

According to him, proportionally closed-door elections trigger political transactions between the people and the candidate for leader must go through political party intermediaries. Because according to him, it is not through intermediaries but must be carried out directly between the people and potential leaders. "Mandatri can only appear if the giver and recipient can have direct contact with each other," said Fahri in a discussion held by the Moya Institute recently, confiscated by Antara, Sunday, January 22.

Meanwhile, legal expert from the University of Indonesia (UI) Chudry Sitompul believes that the articles of the constitution do not mention much about elections, so it appears that the issue has been released to parliament and laws, and seems to be only closely related to the interests of political parties. "Actually, the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia has not touched political parties either. However, in political science and practice, in fact, political parties are important," said Chudry.

According to Chudry, to strengthen democracy and the party system, a closed proportional electoral system is the best. Even so, he suggested that the term proportional election system be open and the closed election system was changed because the open or closed system so far was not the electoral system, but the mechanism that occurred within the political parties. Moya Institute Executive Director Hery Sucipto assessed that a closed or open proportional system had been practiced since the beginning of reform until now in the political life of the Indonesian state. Even so, Hery argues that the two electoral political systems are not perfect and whatever is chosen will have to be able to improve the quality of democracy.
